Welcome to the Greek & Latin Roots Program Page!
Who can we thank for many words in the English language? Well, the ancient Greeks and Romans who spoke Latin! Latin was the first language spoken, so many of our words are based off of words that were used in the ancient days. The word parts that come from ancient Greek and Latin words are called roots.
Each month in ELA, you will be introduced to a set of 10-12 roots to learn. Over the course of the year you will learn about 100 roots. The great thing about learning roots is that they help you to identify the meaning of many unknown words.
Use this page to access the monthly roots list and other materials that will help you learn the roots successfully.

Roots Schedule
- Weekly Schedule
Whenever we have a roots list, the assignments throughout the week to prepare for the quiz will always be the same. Below is that weekly schedule.
Day 1: Receive roots list and create flashcards. Add the root to learn (front), its definition (back) and the word part (prefix/base/suffix) (back). Study your cards for 10-15 minutes.
Day 2: Add the sample words to the front of your flashcards. On the back, write the definition of the sample words. You should use a dictionary or online dictionary to find these definitions. Highlight the root within each sample word. Study your cards for 10-15 minutes.
Day 3: On a separate piece of paper, write sentences that use the sample words correctly in context. These sentences should demonstrate that you understand the meaning of the word. Study your cards for 10-15 minutes.
Day 4: Receive study guide for quiz. Study all material on flashcards that is required for the quiz.
Day 5: Roots quiz.
