The Cay - October - November
by Theodore Taylor
Picture this: You wake up with a pounding headache. You feel an imbalance of the floor beneath you. It is almost as if it's swaying. You look around you and all you can see is bright blue sky and deep blue ocean. There's a man next to you, who doesn't look anything like you.... What would you do? How would you feel?
This is how the rising action in Theodore Taylor's classic novel, The Cay begins. The novel takes place in 1942, and begins on an island off the coast of Venezuela, Curacao. Though the story turns into an exciting adventure story and a tale of survival, Taylor wrote the book and its characters to show the unfairness of prejudice, racism and stereotyping. As we read, think about the following essential questions:
- What types of experiences are necessary for a person to discover, understand or change?
-Why is it important to see ideas from another person's perspective?
-What are the necessary essentials for human survival?
-How can we live our lives to overcome prejudice?
Prior to beginning the book, we need to put the story into context. To do this, we will complete a WebQuest. You will use iPads to research certain topics that relate to the cultural and historical context of the story. Click the link below to access the WebQuest.

Poetry Slam
Interdisciplinary Unit: The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis
Have you ever wondered what life would be like to not have access to education, or to have your possessions taken from you? Or, what about living in a world where girls and women are not allowed outside without a man escorting them, and women are covered from head to toe? This is what life is like for Parvana in The Breadwinner. Unfortunately, although Parvana's story is fiction, her story is very similar to those who live or have lived in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.
