In 1928, the following article was written to identify the "unwritten rules" of detective stories. Read the article, then determine whether any rules were not followed for "A Study in Scarlet." Identify the rule, explain why the rule wasn't followed, then explain how not following the rule affected the story.

A detective story must have Suspense and action, and a culprit who did it.

A good detective story much have a witness, clues, evidence, suspect, alibi, a red herring and a victim. There should also be a good beggining, middle and end, and lots of detail. Also, the story should be suspenceful and it should make you want to keep reading the story.

A good detective story should have a victim, a criminal, a witness, at least one alibi, red herrings, clues, evidence, and it should have a LOT of suspense to make the readers want to read more.

A good detective story, should have a suspect and witness(es) There should also be clues to help the reader solve the mystery on their own. It's important to have red herrings as well, to trick the reader and detective into thinking the crime was done by someone else. finally, the book should have a good ending/conclusion of how the crime was solved, that makes sense to the story.

A good detective story must have clue, evidence, and suspect, victim, witness, alibi, and suspense. The climax must have a lot of action and suspense, resulting in the catching of the culprit. It should keep the reader wondering.

I agree with Anna, It needs a good introduction that hooks the reader so that they keep reading more. I think that a good detective story needs a crime or conflict to be solved. It needs to have suspense and suspect(s)/ witness(es), as Anna said. There also needs to be multiple clues so that the reader can have something to work off of in order to solve the mystery. There also needs to be red-herring to lead the reader off track so the whole story isn't just boring. It also needs a creative ending that ties up the story and resolves the mystery unless it is a really interesting book that ends with a cliff hanger.

A good detective story must have clues, evidence, suspects, victim, witness, suspense, alibi. It makes it more interesting if you have a red herring, and it also should have a plot that thickens like what JC said. Like anna said the book should have a good conclusion to wrap up the mystery but should explain how the murder did what and how the detective solved the mystery.

A good, well written detective story must include a clever detective, a criminal, a good motive for the criminal, a crime, suspense (so you keep reading), a dramatic plot, clues, and an occasional red herring to jazz it all up.

I think a good detective story must have, clues that the reader can use so they can figure out the mystery on there own. Also it should have suspects, a criminal, and witnesses too give suspense and maybe some action. It should end with the crime resolved unless its a series, therefore, it can go on.

I believe that a good detective story, needs to have a crime or conflict that has to be solved. There should also have witnesses and suspects. Detective story needs clues that will hook there readers to keep reading. Another good trick to have is to have a red herring to trick the readers. The ending should have a resolution on how the criminal gets arrested and how he / she did it plus why he/ she did, also it should make sense to the situation.

Rule number 3 states that their must be no love interest. Yet the WHOLE murder was based off f a old love story with Lucy and Jefferson. So that is something that was not followed in this book.

I think that a good mystery story should have clues that the reader can figure out before the people in the story do also I think that that should have more suspense to keep the reader into the story. This is like murders and other crimes along the main problem.

One rule is there should be no love involved in the novel but the whole story is based off a love story (Lucy and strangers) and that is how the murder is caused

A interesting detective story that hooks the reader must have suspense, action, and culprits. One of the rules not followed by the story a study in scarlet is rule number 3 which states there should be no love interest and clearly the story is based off love.

In " A Study In Scarlet" the rule of solving the crime with the detective wasn't followed because we hadn't known most of the things that Sherlock found, for example we didn't know that Sherlock called Cleveland back and found out about Lucy and Drebber.

Rules for mystery were not fallowed in A Study In Scarlet. For example when sherlock called clevland or when they found rache (a red herring) it ddidn't affect them.
